I am fond of saying that boredom is the birthplace for creativity. Give them a period of time to get through the boredom stage and then step out of the way and prepare to be amazed by what they will come up with! My kids still occasionally profess boredom (ages 13, 12 and 11) but it doesn't last long before there is a flurry of story writing, drawing, movie making, picture taking, robot building, carving, reading or other beautiful busyness. I concur that it is more than okay to be bored!

Thanks, Hamo -- just what I needed in front of another 10 days of kids at home from school. My oldest (5) was actually in tears last night at the dinner table (before she got a couple of bites in) because school is so much more fun than being home! Let her be bored.

Great ideas, Sonja!

LOL ... my kids have learned that coming to me with "I'm bored" leads to statements like "a bored mind is a small mind" and "If you're bored, I have some chores for you to do." There are windows to be washed, knick-knacks to be dusted, floors to be vacuumed or mopped, baseboards to be washed, laundry to sorted, washed or folded, etc. I can always think of things for "bored" children to do ... none of it is fun. It's not punishment either, it's just negative feedback. Eventually, they will get the idea that going to mom or dad with that complaint doesn't work out in their favor.

We adults have to persevere through all sorts of uncomfortable circumstances. We learned how to do so by first learning how to get through being bored.

fwiw ...
